Attention disorder with/without hyperactivity/impulsivity

This neurodevelopmental disorder often emerges during childhood, before the age of 12. Symptoms vary, from inattention and disorganization to hyperactivity with impulsive tendencies, among others. It is not uncommon for the disorder to go undetected during childhood and for it to be only in adulthood that the person becomes aware of their attentional difficulties and/or hyperactivity.

How does ADHD manifest?

When we notice symptoms of inattention, such as making careless mistakes, having difficulty staying focused on given tasks, being easily distracted, losing things often, forgetting frequently, etc.

Symptoms of hyperactivity/impulsivity may manifest as behaviors such as hand fidgeting, motor agitation, talking excessively in social settings, cutting people off, not appearing to listen, etc.

Generally speaking, with advancing age, only symptoms of inattention persist, while symptoms of hyperactivity/impulsivity decrease or disappear. However, hyperactivity/impulsivity may manifest differently in adults compared to children.

I offer comprehensive assessments to screen for ADHD in adolescents and adults. Depending on the results, I also offer treatment for symptoms of inattention and/or hyperactivity/impulsivity according to the people's objectives and complaints.

ADHD Neuropsychological Assessments

The aim of the neuropsychological assessment is to detect symptoms that may reveal the presence of ADHD. The assessment lasts between 2.5 and 3.5 hours (and can be carried out in two sessions) with a clinical interview and the completion of questionnaires and tests. Once this first part has been completed, the neuropsychologist takes some time to evaluate the results and write a report. Finally, the return of the report takes approximately half an hour to an hour.

What to do with your assessment?

I

Use the assessment to guide appropriate treatment. Depending on the results, various therapies or treatments can be offered, for example to reduce symptoms of inattention, disorganization, improve social skills in cases of impulsivity or treat hyperactive tendencies.

Consulting a psychiatrist or neurologist may be necessary to obtain a diagnosis and possibly be prescribed methylphenidate, a psychostimulant frequently used for symptoms of inattention.

Depending on the results and the wishes of each individual, therapeutic treatment may be considered at the end of the assessment, particularly with regard to symptoms of inattention (disorganization, loss of belongings, deconcentration, distractibility, etc.).
